What is a Community Air Monitoring Network (CAMN)?
A Community Air Monitoring Network is a collection of air monitors located in disproportionate impacted communities throughout the County or State that:
The CAMN would include a Steering Committee (or advisory body) comprised of impacted community residents, local EJ advocates, local experts, academia, public health, regulatory agency and other government agencies to guide the activities of the CAMN). The CAMN aligns with Rep. Lisa Blunt-Rochester’s bill to mandate new air monitoring in frontline communities and the ALERT Act to direct EPA to create a community notification program that engage and inform residents in real-time of any toxic release. It also line-up with the Biden and Harris Environmental Justice Plan to use the Inclusive and Empowering, All-of Government Approach that amplify the voices of disproportionate impacted communities.
- Is established and operated by a community-based organization (CHEC Inc.)
- Is intended to be long-term (usually 3 – 5 years intervals)
- Aims to measure ambient air quality (versus measuring pollutants from a single specific source)
- Continuously measures air pollution (no peak and/or valley time periods)
- Collects data that are made available in real-time to the public
